My name is Amanda Miller and I am halfway through completing my MBA at St. Edward’s University. I love to travel, get to know people, learn about different cultures, find new ways to be happy, and continue to grow through people and new experiences. The SOS Gr8 Woman Leaders program is helping me to put my life into perspective, set goals accordingly, make lasting connections, and lead a life of happiness.
Helping others is a key way I bring my leadership to life. I am still in contact with my little sister from Big Brothers Big Sister back in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It’s amazing how much older and mature she has become! She went from getting in fist fights with kids on the bus to dedicating her time to basketball and making better grades. All she needed was someone to support her, and I was more than happy to do that. Additionally, I sponsor a beautiful little girl, Priscilla, in Ghana, Africa through Compassion International. I know my letters give her hope, strength, and support. I can’t wait to one day meet her, and prove to her that she has a voice too.
I love seeing the positive results that support and encouragement can achieve. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Right now, my goal is to focus on myself and what my purpose is in life. I’m working on figuring out what I love, what I’m great at, what I need to work on…etc. Without knowing these things, how can I help others to be the best they can be? Taking the steps to find out who I am will lead me to helping myself and others grow and reach their full potential.
Although I have never worked full-time for a company, leadership is prevalent in my life because I want it to be. I have found that jumping head first into new, scary activities prove to be qualities of a leader. That’s why I ventured over to Australia all by my little self to live a semester abroad there. I wanted to challenge myself, get out of my comfort zone, and learn about a new culture. Later, I thought a non-English speaking country would be an even greater challenged, so I gave it a shot. Through my travels, I have learned the utmost importance of listening, learning, being humble, and never giving up on myself.
I am very much looking forward to what is to come, who I will meet, and the experiences I have yet to make. Currently I am spending a lot of time focusing on myself in order to improve my leadership skills for the future. And in the future, I hope to become a great leader not only for myself, but everyone around me.
Stay tuned in the days to come as the Bring Your Leadership to Life Series continues….
