Many of you may have seen this video before, because it’s pretty funny. It also contains a profound message about leadership.
The passenger is terrified…until he learns the driver is Jeff Gordon. Then he asks, “Can we do it again?” What this tells me is that he didn’t necessarily dislike the actual events of the test drive, what he couldn’t stand what not knowing who his driver was. In the absence of information to the contrary, he assumed that the driver was a crazy guy who didn’t really know what he was doing and was going to get them killed. Once he knew the driver he had confidence and as a result he wanted to do the exact same thing that had him cussing and planning to call the police. The problem was never the test drive, it was his understanding of the driver.
I find I am the same way with leaders. I don’t mind hard work, long hours, and tough sells on one condition, that I trust the driver. The same exact actions and situations are totally different depending on who is doing the driving. What I would gladly do for one person I may never do for another.
Who are the leaders in your life? What would you do for them? How are you seen? What would people gladly do for you?
